David Zollo - The Big Night

Dave Zollo - The Big Night

Dave Zollo is an eastern Iowa musician who I’ve had the pleasure of hearing play several times. Much of his music relates to the area around Johnson and Washington counties, including many places that I have been in real life. (Kind of like going to the CC Club and after listening to The Replacements “Here Comes a Regular”) His style is a combination of rock, blues, country, and roots; and his albums are published by his own Trailer Records label which will cleanse your soul of RIAA badness.

Emusic.com has Dave Zollo - The Big Night, check it out…

Music in the Zoo

Tags: , , , , , Posted in Events at 3:13 pm by Mat

So, a couple of summers ago (2 or 1–I really don’t remember), a bunch of us talked about going to the Music in the Park at the Minnesota Zoo. Well, the 2007 line-up has just been announced and I’m putting out a call for the August 7th John Hiatt and Shawn Colvin Show or the August 10th Son Volt show. I’m not uber-impressed with the line-up, but know for sure that John Hiatt puts on a kick-ass show (I’ve seen him) and Shawn Colvin writes amazing songs. Let’s talk while we run.

Weekend fun!

You can still register for the Get-In-Gear 10K on Saturday. Unfortunately, you can no longer register for the Minnesota Ironman Bike Ride on Sunday. However if you are going to do the 100 mile distance on Sunday, you can keep your eye out for me. I’ll be the guy going horribly slow (late) or crazy fast. (early) I look for the wall to rear up and smash me somewhere around mile 35 or so. Looks like it’s going to be a long day.

The Young Gods - XXY

How can you not listen — at least once — to a band described as, Swiss electro-noise terrorists? I mean, they’re Swiss. You know, that neutral place over there on the continent. How exactly do they create electo-noise terrorists? They get mentioned with the likes of Loop, KMFDM, and Rammstein; so if those things appeal then you should check these guys out.

Cutters ride again..

In case you missed it, the Little 500 is going to be broadcast on TV. That’s right, HDNet is going to broadcast four hours of collegiate, single speed, cinder track racin’. (That’s a little tip ‘O the hat to the rest of the state of Indiana and that other little race.)

Some Titles to Consider

First off, I don’t know if I’m doing this right. Second off, I’ll just attempt it and face considerable criticism next Monday if I am doing it wrong.

Check this wicked shit out:

A Great Movie: I watched Sherry Baby, a low-budget movie about an ex-con mom who just gets out of jail. She has considerable emotional problems, which make this movie edgy.

My New Favorite Read: The Road by Cormac McCarthy. Think creepy. Think poetic. Think end of the world.

Some Good Music: Believe it or not, I’m really digging Bright Eyes new CD Cassadaga–sort of strange, musically, but fun and a little too hip for me, on most occasions.

NYC Marathon

For those interested…

I signed up for the New York City Marathon today under the Ad-Hoc team of Franke Run Club.  Unfortunately the entry fee went up to $120 and there doesn’t seem to be an easy way to get a guaranteed entry.  But since I have already donated at least $400 to this silly race over the years, and have yet to run it, I think you all should do the same.  However, if you go with the Marine Corp Marathon-I’ll probably join you there too.

THE 30th ANNUAL GET IN GEAR RUN | IN HONOR OF HEIDI ANN MCFARLANE

Please join us for the 30th Annual Get In Gear 10k, 5k and 2k Run/Walk on Saturday, April 28th, 2007

at Minnehaha Park in Minneapolis, MN to show your support for Heidi Ann McFarlane.

Heidi Ann McFarlane has been battling an unknown brain disease since June of 2005. A once active marathon runner herself, Heidi has been physically incapacitated for more than a year. In fact, Heidi has not stood upright on her own two feet since late 2005 and has not spoken an understandable word since June of 2006. Having been in and out of hospitals since November of last year, Heidi currently resides at Texas Terrace Nursing Home in St. Louis Park, MN. In January of 2007, KSTP-TV in Minneapolis, MN produced a story about Heidi and her mystery illness.

Heidi has always been a wonderful inspiration to those around her, but the strength she has shown over the past year and a half is nothing short of spectacular. Without speaking a word, Heidi continues to inspire great selflessness by those whose lives she touches. The daily courage, strength and determination Heidi exhibits in her fight to regain the vitality she lost has motivated Heidi’s friends Karen Loomis and Lisa Wurm to organize “Heidi’s Angels” which will participate at this years Get In Gear Run/Walk in Minneapolis, MN.

WHAT: The 30th Annual Get In Gear 10k, 5k & 2k Run/Walk
WHERE: Minnehaha Park | 4825 Minnehaha Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN
WHEN: Saturday, April 28, 2007 | 2k @ 8:30am | 5k @ 9:50am | 10k @ 9:30am
COST: $23 (Note: 100% of this fee goes to the event organizers. 0% of this money will go to support Heidi.)

REGISTER: Join “Heidi’s Angels” and register for the Get In Gear run/walk.

(When registering, YOU MUST select “Corporate Get In Gear 5k, 10k & 2k” to identify yourself as a member of Team Heidi.)

“HEIDI’S ANGELS” GIVING

Heidi’s fight to survive has required great personal and financial sacrifice. Access to the brightest professionals at the best medical institutions as well as the appropriate rehabilitation and skilled nursing facilities has come at great financial expense. Heidi is currently enjoying the peacefulness of her own private room (additional $25 per day, $750 per month) at Texas Terrace and we are investigating the effectiveness of a computer device from DynaVox which we hope will help Heidi communicate in the future. Members of “Heidi’s Angels” are asked to make a minimum contribution of $25 to help maintain her private living quarters and defray the expenses associated with additional rehabilitation and the technology required to help Heidi communicate with her family and friends.

Jim Sanford at the law firm of Stephenson & Sanford, P.L.C. in Wayzata, MN has prepared the “Heidi Ann McFarlane Special Needs Trust”. To make a contribution, please make your check payable to “Heidi Ann McFarlane Special Needs Trust”. Contributions may be sent to Rick Lindquist, 2551 Bridle Creek Trail, Chanhassen, MN 55317 or

Bill McFarlane, 8611 Wood Cliff Circle South, Bloomington, MN 55438.

SPECIAL NOTE: Contributing members of “Heidi’s Angels” will be presented with a special long sleeve t-shirt to be worn during the race in her honor. Following the run/walk, members of “Heidi’s Angels” will be invited to attend a post-race reception (food and beverages provided) at a location yet to be determined. God willing, Heidi herself will be there to welcome and thank her supporters. Details to follow.
